I've never played Angband or any of it's variant before, so I've decided to try it and write down what happens. I don't have much experience of playing roguelikes, because I'm more of a roguelike developer than a player, so my first game is not likely to last that long. But regardless of whether it lasts 2 minutes or 2 weeks, I'll write it all here. I'll be aided in this task by Middy, my beautiful kitten.
First, I start where I always start when I want to learn about something, at Wikipedia. The Angband article provides a nice overview, explaining the main aim of the game and the history. Everything looks nicely up-to-date and it lists 3.0.9 as the latest version, which matches the official site.
I download version 3.0.9 from the official site and have a quick look around at some useful stuff, like The Novices Guide.
I read through the readme and faq files, which say there is a problem with walls in Vista, but hopefully I wont get that.
Time to load up the game! I feel a little bit excited and even Middy stops miaowing for a mome- oh, no, she's started again.

I go to File, New and start creating a character. I just want a simple character, so I select Male, Human, Warrior, Point-Based. Those are (mostly) the first options in each list, so my idea that they are the simplest is reinforced.

Looks like my character is "Very Good" at fighting, so I think that's a great start! I wasn't sure what some things meant (RB = Race Bonus? CB = Class Bonus? EB = Equipment Bonus?), so I pressed '?' but nothing happened. I messed around with the stats for a while, trying to find a good combination that left me with some gold. Eventually I just decided not to spend all the points, so that I could get 1000 gold coins. If things get too tough in the dungeon, I could just run away. 1000 gold coins is a lot of money to a commoner!

I randomly selected 'Sari' as my characters name, and away we go! It's been 22 minutes since I opened the game.

I enter the town, which looks rather odd. I think the Vista Wall Monster may have got me. I went over to the solution thread and followed the instructions in post 3. I saved the game in Angband, restarted, went to Open and selected the Sari file.

Middy purrs loudly. I know from the novice guide that these are all shops and it gave some hints as to what I should buy, so I decide to follow that advice. It says to get a cheap weapon, so I grab a Broadsword (2d5) (+0,+0) for 360 gold. The game informs me that I now have two broadswords. Whooops. I feel a bit stupid. I should have looked in my inventory first.

Nevermind, maybe I'll break one and need the other. I go back to the weapon shop and buy a sling for 7 gold. I'm not sure what type of ammunition I need for the sling, so I exit out of the shop and accidentally kill a Blubbering idiot. Ah well, no one was around to see, so I just pretend nothing happened... Shhhh...
I look through the help for an examine command to see some information about the sling I bought and I find it, it's 'x'. I exit out of help, press 'x' and the game says "Type '?' for help.". Hmmm. I open the inventory and press 'f' for the sling, but I'm just told I have nothing to fire with. I decide to just buy all 40 iron shots from the store, because that seems like a logical thing to use in a sling. The stores are very simple to use, so I'm happy with that.
I continue to follow the novice instructions, by getting some flasks of oil (4 at 4gp each). As I wander around the town, some singing happy drunks decide to follow me. I buy some cure serious wounds potions (4 at 52gp each). I also grab a scroll of identify (174gp) because it might be useful and 2 scrolls of magic mapping (50gp each) because they might be useful.
I feel at this point that every adventure would start exactly the same by going to grab stuff from shops. That might get a bit tedious, but I also remember reading that Angband games can take weeks, so maybe it isn't so bad.
I wear/wield my chainmail, a wooden torch and a broadsword. Excellent, I'm all ready for adventuring. I enter the dungeon!

Luckily I haven't started right next to a whole bunch of horrible creatures who kill me straight away! There's something, a "-", over to the left. I press 'l' and see that it's a lead-plated wand. Angband obviously has the random-colours-for-item-types feature, which I like, because it adds a bit of mystery and surprise. I make getting that wand my first quest. It turns out to be a very easy quest though, because all I do is walk over there and nothing else happens. I grab the wand. Some of the walls haven't appeared, which I guess is probably the Vista Wall Monster again. I've noticed a door to the south, so I decide to go that way.

Middy is fast asleep on my lap, unaware of the potential danger that I may be about to walk into. The corridor goes south a couple of squares and then splits left and right. Left worked out well before, so I stick with that direction. The corridor splits out again, down and left. I stick with left. I go towards the edge of the screen and the whole map moves over. I like that method better than moving the map every turn and keeping the player in the middle. The corridor snakes it's way upwards and I see a room... and my first hostile creature. A scary orange 'e'!

It's asleep, but I get a bit overexcited and wake Middy up. Who decides to sneeze all over me. There's 26 iron spikes lying on the ground, but I think my stealth is very bad, so I'm not sure whether to risk getting them. Hmmm. They're quite far away, I'm on full health, what's the worst that could hap-- oh, right, I could die. I go for them anyway, walk over, grab them and then rush back down the corridor. Heart beating loudly. The floating eye wakes up! It doesn't move though, so I just rush off back down the corridor.
I take the path down, which splits a few times, but I continue in a southward direction. I come across a strange cross of doors, which I open and go through. Suddenly an 'R' pops out of the darkness right next to me! No chance to escape this one. I use the examine command and see that it's a Rock Lizard. I don't think running away is a good idea, so I hit it with my broadsword and kill it on the first hit!

Take that!!! I go south to see where the lizard came from and enter a large rectangular room. It contains a dagger and a set of gloves.

The dagger is probably useless, so I ignore that. I grab the leather gloves and put them on. My AC goes from 15 to 16.

A sleeping giant white centipede pops into view, but it's far away in the distance and past a dark corridor. It sounds rather nasty so I decide to go in the opposite direction, west. As I exit the west side of the rectangular room a message flashes up, but I miss it. I look through the help and it says the message history command is Control+P. I look through the history:

I continue west and see a sleeping kobold. Creatures sure sleep a lot round here! But at least it makes my adventuring easier. It's now midnight in real-life, so I decide to go and get some sleep. It's been 1 hour and 20 minutes since I opened Angband. I'll resume play tomorrow night.
The next day
It's now early evening. During my lunch hour at work I had a quick look through the files in the help folder, so I feel like I know more about the game now. I've also commented out more lines in the font file, so hopefully I wont meet the Vista Wall Monster.
Middy is attacking my ironing board.

Here we are, back in the pit. I see there are now some '%' symbols, so I think all my walls are back to normal. I walk towards the kobold.

It wakes up, but it's only a small kobold. I don't think it'll be any match for my mighty strength and broadsword(s)! It dies on the first hit. This game seems to be rather easy, but I suspect I may be horribly wrong in thinking that. This is only the first level, after all. The kobold dropped 16 copper coins, so I pick them up. I read earlier that the map can be seen by pressing Control+M:

It's not completely clear. For example, there's a big room in the top left, but on the map it's no bigger than the corridor. It gives a reasonable overview though and I imagine that with time I would better understand how it works. A giant white mouse (r) was sleeping in the room with the kobold.

I try to sneak around the edge of the room, but at the last possible opportunity the mouse wakes up. Middy doesn't seem particularly bothered, so she just goes to look out the window. I make a 'good hit' against the mouse and kill it on the first hit.

Another giant mouse was close by, so I kill that as well. I've now reached character level 2! I have 24 hit points, instead of 20.

I continue upwards and around a few a few corridors. My health slowly increases. I dislike automatic regeneration, because I feel it makes the game a bit tedious waiting to heal back. Losing the automatic healing would also make healing items more important. I grab a crimson potion and walk back down to the room that had the kobold and rats. I take the other north corridor which goes into a large room.

I go too close to a mushroom, which makes me confused and takes away 4 of my hit points. This is the first time I've been damaged! It seems like the mushroom patch is a monster, which I hit and destroy straight away. The confusion wears off after a few turns. There's no other way out of the room, so I go back.

I remember seeing a door earlier, so I go back towards that. It goes up to a room with a rat in it. I've killed them easily back on character level 1, so I casually walk over and smite it. It doesn't even wake up. There's 35 copper coins in the room, which I grab and add to the 16 from earlier. I go up a corridor north, but it's just a dead end, so I go back. I take a corridor going south.

Not much going on here. Perhaps it used to be a dwarven hall, where the king ate roasted pheasant from his golden throne, whilst all his servants ate scraps of rat meat from the floor. I take the exit to the south.

It goes into a long winding corridor and eventually comes out into a room.

Lots going on in this room! There's a large white sleeping snake, a cloak and three rats. The large snake might be a difficult opponent, especially if those rats start biting me. The rats are awake so I backup into the corridor, so that I can take them on one at a time.

A whole pack of rats appear! I count at least 9 of them so far. I was hoping they would wake the snake up and then the snake would eat them all, but no such luck. The rats are very easy to take down one at a time. I kill 10 of them on the first hit. One rat bites me for 2hp damage. I kill some more. Two graze me and I'm down to 20hp. I kill a whole load more and even more appear. There's a whole clan of them! After a few kills I'm down to 18hp, but I've reached character level 3!

I get a bit more aggressive and go into the room to kill them. The tactic works nicely and soon they are all dead. I'm down to 10hp, which could be pretty bad if that snake hits me. There's not much room to get past the snake, so I don't want to risk trying to escape.

I look through my inventory for something useful to attack the snake with from a distance. That lead-plated wand might be good. Even if it doesn't work, it probably wouldn't do anything, so the snake wouldn't wake up. I look through the command reference help. It says 'a' is Aim a Wand and 'z' is Zap a Wand. I'm not sure which to use, but I guess on 'a'. As a warrior I'm probably terrible with wands, but I give it a go anyway. I press 'a', then 'h' for the wand, then left, but the message disappears. I try 'a', 'h', then click on the snake, but nothing happens. Hmmm. Maybe as a warrior I just can't use wands. I have a potion of berserk strength, so I drink that instead.

My health has gone all the way up to 35hp. I think the snake is no match for a full health, berserk, level 3 warrior so I go over to smite it. I go over and as anticipated, I kill it in one hit. It doesn't even wake up. That cloak is mine...

Whooops. The equipment menu informs me that the cloak was cursed! I'm not sure what it's done though. Hopefully nothing too bad. I try to take it off, but as expected, I can't. That would be a bit too easy! Middy appears and decides to go to sleep on my lap. A giant white mouse appears from the corridor. It must have been with the massive pack of them from before. I slay it easily.

I go along the north corridor, which goes into a large room. The giant white centipede (c) that I saw earlier is in here, along with a Yellow Speckled Potion and a rock lizard (R). I killed a rock lizard earlier, so I know they don't put up much of a fight. I haven't met a giant white centipede yet though, so I'm cautious about that.

I hit the rock lizard and it starts running away. This sounds like a good time to make use of that sling. I equip the sling with 'w'. Press 'f' to select the iron shots. I'm asked for a direction, so I press the left arrow, but nothing happens. Hmmm. I'm not sure I understand targetting yet. I look through the help and it says to press '*' to initiate targetting mode. I do that and then press 't'. The iron shot hits and kills the rock lizard!

Excellent :) Maybe I can try this tactic on the giant white centipede. I throw an iron shot at it... a hit! It "writhes in agony" and then "flees in terror!". I throw another iron shot and it dies!

I walk around collecting the iron shots that got thrown around. A jackal appears and I fire another shot at it... it hits and kills the jackal straight away! Throwing stuff is obviously a great tactic to use. I grab the last shot and the Yellow Speckled Potion. Another jackal appears, so I hit that as well. It howls in agony and flees. It goes out of sight though, so I can't finish it off. I open the door on the south edge of the room, but it's just a dead end. I go west towards the fleeing jackal and see a white icky thing (i). I 'l'ook at the creature and then 'r'ead some information about it.

I fire an iron shot at it and it dies straight away. That was easy. The fleeing jackal appears, so I finish it off with my broadsword. I look round a few nearby corridors, but they are all empty dead ends. I go back east and accidentally step on a trap!

It confuses me, but with no creatures around that's probably not too much of a problem.

I continue west along a corridor. I enter a room which contains a grey mold. There's a basic looking dagger on the floot and the grey molds info says it doesn't move towards intruders, so I just leave it alone. I open the nearby door.

The corridor goes north and into a small empty room. I take the path left which splits. One way is blocked by rubble, so I go north. It looks like this will join up with the entrance to the dungeon. I remember that the down stairs was right next to the entrance and I'm up to character level 3, so I decide to go to the stairs. I pick up some more copper coins along the way

I descend deeper into the dungeon.

The layout of this room looks a bit odd, but maybe if I move around the other squares will appear. There's a sleeping metallic green centipede to the left. I throw an iron shot at it, but miss completely. Perhaps I need to get closer. I creep towards the centipede, as it wakes up.

I fire an iron shot and the centipede "shrieks in pain". I fire another and it "cries out feebly". Then it begins to flee and disappears out of view. I run after it and suddenly it appears next to me. I kill it with my broadsword. I look round this weird room and notice there are two up staircases. I decide to take a quick peek up the one I didn't use to get here.

Ack! I just remembered Angband doesn't have persistent levels, so I can't just return to that level again. Nevermind. I just go back down.

I take a little break to feed Middy and myself.
In the first dungeon I went left, so I decide to go right here but it's just a dead end. I return to the stairs and go left. It opens into a room and I see a creature blink away. I believe blink means to teleport to a nearby location, so I'm a bit cautious considering the creature might be dangerous, especially if it can cast magic.

I enter the room and see a fruit bat lurking in the corner. I imagine that it will be difficult to hit, but not do much damage. I move towards the fruit bat and it bites me for 1hp damage. I kill it on my first hit. I go back to the closed door, which suddenly opens and a red 'p' jumps out next to me.

It's a novice mage. I'm probably at a major advantage here, because I'm already ideally placed to send a massive strike right into the mage with my broadsword. I hit the mage and the mage flees in terror! I chase...

The corridor splits and I must have gone the opposite way to the mage. All it not lost though, because it sounds like a mushroom patch may have attacked it. I then hear a sudden stirring in the distance. Hmmm. I'm not sure what to make of that. However, a novice mage is likely to have some magical items, so I head right, where I think it must be.

It's just a dead end. How strange. Where did the novice mage go to? Then I remember... it can blink! I go back right towards the room and see a shrieker mushroom patch. Maybe it was that one making all the noise.

There's also a Silver Speckled Potion and Flask of Oil in the room. As I go across the room I hear stirring several times and the shreiker continues shreiking.

I go out of the door in the south west of that room, which goes along a corridor and to a closed door.

That's a lot of spiders! When I met the bunch of rats in dungeon level 1, there was at least 3 times more than the nine I could originally see. According to the description, these move fast. I decide that retreat is the safest option and press 'c' to close the door. I go back along the corridor and the spiders don't follow.

I go all the way back to the room I first entered and the novice mage reappears! But the novice mage is uninjured now. I rush over to attack, but I miss and the novice mage hits. Only for 1hp though. I hit the novice mage and it blinks away again. I take the corridor to the north and a 'R' appears in the room I was just in. It's a giant green frog, which is probably not too difficult. I ignore the frog and continue up the corridor, but it's just a dead end. I go back down.

I hit the frog and it flees in terror. Everything runs away around here! I chase after it and kill it. I advance to character level 4!

As I enter the room, the novice mage is there. I hit it, it runs away in terror, but doesn't blink. I hit it again and it's dead. Finally!! It only had 18 copper coins though, which is a bit disappointing. I go out of the higher of the western doors and along a slightly twisted corridor. I notice a sleeping white jelly and try to walk around it.

It wakes up. The description says it doesn't chase after intruders, so I just continue walking. I go out of the north corridor and continue north when it splits. I open a door and come face-to-face with a novice warrior. I'm pretty much a novice warrior, so this might be a fair fight! I attack.

We hit each other and I'm down to 45hp. I hit again and the novice warrior flees. I chase and slay it easily. It has a gloopy green potion and there's a white potion nearby. I've got a lot of potions now and there's no creatures around, so I decide to try them out.
I drink a crimson potion, which makes me feel "resistant to fire". I'm informed that it's a potion of 'Resist Heat'. I drink a Yellow Speckled Potion, but nothing happens. I drink a Silver Speckled Potion and I feel like I'm "moving faster". I'm informed that it's a potion of 'Speed'. I drink a White Potion, which turns out to be a Potion of Confusion. Lucky I decide to try it out in safety! I walk around and it lasts a lot of turns. I drink a Gloopy Green potion and feel "resistant to cold". I'm informed that it's a potion of 'Resist Cold'.
That's all my potions. There were three unexplored corridors when I came into the room, but all the confused walking around showed that two of them are just dead ends. I go out of the one that leads somewhere, which is the north corridor.

The corridor leads into a room, containing a white jelly and some copper. I know that white jellies are harmless unless attacked, so I grab the copper, which turns out to be 23 copper coins. The stairs down is located here. I look towards it and Middy meows gently and strokes her head against my hand. I take it as a sign and proceeds into dungeon level 3.

The level messages are a bit odd. If the dungeon generator is capable of determinging how interesting a place is, why doesn't it just generate interesting locations? Hmmm. Maybe that's an option somewhere. I see an 'n' in the corner of the room, which is a Black Naga. The description says it has a large serpent body with a female torso. Its asleep and sounds like it might be dangerous, so I go out of the north exit of the room.

It leads to a large room, containing a steel wand, a potion of confusion and a spotted mushroom patch. I grab the wand. I know how to target now and I don't think the mushroom patch can move, so I decide to try it out.

A blue shimmering line appears and then a message appears saying I've reordered some items in my pack. I look in my pack and see that the wand was a Wand of Light. That doesn't sound particularly useful at the moment. Middy walks right in front of my monitor.
I go out of the other southern exit to the room, because it's the only unexplored area. I meet a novice warrior who suddenly jumps out of the shadows. The last one I met was fairly wimpy, so I attack.

We exchange a few hits and then the warrior runs off. I chase up a corridor going north and hit. It's dead! It was carrying an Icky Green potion. I hope the 'icky' part just refers to the colour, so I quaff it. I feel less thirsty and am told it's a potion of Slime Mold Juice.

I continue north until I meet a wild cat. Nothing I've encountered in the whole game has been even mildly challenging, so I attack. I hit it twice and it runs off in terror. I hit it with two iron shots and it dies.

Before it died, the wild cat had ran off into a room, which I go into. It just contains a green centipede which wakes up. I decide to leave the iron shots, because I've got lots of them. I go back down the corridor. I continue past my first encounter with a novice warrior on this level and find a potion of berserk strength, which I grab. The corridor splits a few times, but I keep going south each time. I enter a small room.

I continue round a few empty corridoors, dead ends and rooms of different sizes. Nothing happens. Eventually I meet a giant white louse, which I kill in one hit. I acquire a mithril plated wand.

I go back south and open a door, where a white harpy is lying in wait on the other side. No chance of escaping this creature, especially because it can fly. I attack and kill it in one hit. The creatures sure are easy around here.
I continue along the corridor in a northern direction. I come across something I haven't seen before, it's a quartz vein with treasure.

I look through the command reference and it says I can tunnel, but it also says that quartz is very hard to tunnel through. I give it a try anyway. I 'T'unnel into the vein and it "touches" me. A message then says "Your purse feels lighter. 29 coins were stolen!" By a quartz vein?! I suspect something strange is going on here, perhaps some kind of monster than can hide in the walls. Then there is a "puff of smoke".

I tunnel back into the quartz and it is destroyed. I've found 27 copper coins. Perhaps the other two got broken during the tunneling. I go into the room to the west and grab a Slime Mold Juice.

I go out of one of the south exits to the room, which both lead into another room. The room contains the first scroll that I've found in the dungeon. It is labelled "ve ex virgo". There's a giant black ant nearby. I kill it on the first hit and advance to character level 5. I grab the scroll.

I spot another quartz vein in the room. I tunnel into it and find 29 copper coins. I'm not sure what the purpose of the money is though. Perhaps there are merchants in the dungeon somewhere or underground towns. Perhaps I can return to the town using magic or a long walk. I go out of that room via the west door and head down into another room. I grab 35 copper coins.

I try to leave via the west door, but the corridor is filled up with rubble. I tunnel into it and remove it. I continue along the corridor when I get a message "You hit it" even though nothing appears to be there.

An invisible creature, or a sneaky one? Either way, they grab 31 of my hard-earned copper coins and disappear in a puff of smoke. I'll have a few words to say if I meet them again! I stumble upon some stairs up, but ignore them.

I continue along the corridor until I reach a room. There's a gold potion and some copper here. The door suddenly bursts open by an unseen creature. Perhaps it's something nasty, so I quaff the berserk potion I have stored up. Nothing appears though, so I investigate the open door and it just leads into a corridor which goes back to the room. No sign of any creatures. I go out of the southern exit.

I continue along a corridor until a dog appears. It's named "Grip" and apparently belongs to Farmer Maggot. Its bitten me, so I assume it must be hostile. I try to hit and miss. We fight for a little bit. It's nice to finally find a worthy opponent. I'm down to 42/58hp before it runs off in terror. It doesn't go far though, so I hit it once more and it's dead. I go south a little bit, but it just looks like a big room so I go back to the split and go left.

A salamander appears from the darkness of the corridor and attacks. It misses a few times, while I hit and it's dead without any trouble.
Middy suddenly starts making a load of noise from the bathroom, so I go and investigate. There's a spider climbing around the bath. I drop the spider onto the outside window ledge and return to the game.

By chance, I stumble upon a whole load of sleeping cave spiders. Which strikes me as a bit strange, because whenever I see a spider in real-life it's always scuttling around. But I suppose they must sleep sometimes, just hidden away. There's a wand of light in the room, which doesn't sound too tempting and I already have one. I don't want to attack all the spiders, so I go back down the corridor and then into the room to the south.

The room turned out to be a big dead end, so I return back to the spider room. On the way I get a message saying my light is getting faint. I packed lots of oil though. I look through the command descriptions. Looks like 'F' fuels the torch so I press that. My torch glows more brightly.

I sneak through the spider room and out of the southern corridor, but it's just a loop back to the room. The only way to proceed is past all the spiders. Hmmm. This could get nasty.
I look through my inventory. There's a gold potion, which I quaff. It says I'm moving slower! I then try a cyan potion, but it has no effect. I have no more potions, but I do have the scroll labelled ve ex virgo. As a warrior I'll probably not be able to use it, but it's worth a try. I read the scroll and am surrounded by a white light. It's just a light scroll. I have a magic mapping scroll, so I go to the south west bit of the spider room to try it. But before I do...

Some of the spiders wake up! I move back towards the loop so that I can fight them one at a time. The spiders are vicious though and I'm hit a couple of times and knocked down to 45/58hp. More spiders wake up and I'm down to 30/58hp.

Middy comes over and rests herself against me, as if too comfort me in case the inevitable happens. I'm not going down without a fight though and now I'm in a good position to only attack one at a time. It's not over yet!
I move down into the loop and nothing happens. No spiders follow me. Maybe I'm safe! There isn't much I can do here though, so I decide to make a run for it. Big mistake!

I'm surrounded by cave spiders! I move north one square.

I've got no hope of defeating them. Do I run or quaff a health potion? If I take the potion I'm going to get hit a lot. If I don't, I'll get hit anyway but have less health. I quaff a potion.

I got a lot of health back, but got hit a lot. I'm 2 hp better than before, but almost completely surrounded. I go south east, the only way I can.

I see a glimmer of light. If I continue south east, I'll reach a choke point. Then I can attack them one at a time and quaff some healing potions. It's my only chance. I go south east again.

Most of the spiders miss, so I only take another 2 hp damage. If I go south I can only be attacked by two spiders at most, so I go south.

This is it now. I'm nearly dead. I think my best option is to quaff a healing potion. Maybe I'll survive a few more turns.

I accidentally quaff the Slime Mold Juice potion instead!!

But it didn't matter, there was no chance of escaping from all the spiders. Two of them bite me and I die.

My gravestone.

The end of my first ever game of Angband.
